A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE KEYS
The Keys Bar (or Cross Keys as it was once know) has stood on this site since 1858, keeping the townsfolk and visitors of St Andrews warm and merry with its friendly welcome and substantial varieties of whisky and beers!
On Market Street we have a Lammas Market, which dates back to around 1620. It was James VI who started it as a privilege, it still exists today but is more of a street fair, it includes, funfair rides, market stall and food and drink from the continent.
Outside the Bar stood the tollbooth where taxes were collected. It was also used as a debtor’s prison, a police station and for the detention of petty criminals.

My wife and I were made to feel at home in the Keys from the moment we first arrived in St Andrews. A bar full of character, charm and friends. Just wish we could take it back to Austin in Texas.

The Keys Bar is where I am certain to meet a friendly and familiar face to enjoy a beer and a blether. Proud to call it my local.
